The “Internet Of Things”.. It sounds very mysterious but in essence, it’s not that hard. We all know that these days our fridges, our magnetron and yes, even our popcorn makers are getting connected to the internet. Now, I have to be honest, I don’t really care if my popcorn maker gets hacked at 3 AM, though I would be spooked if I smelled fresh popcorn in the wee hours of the day. It gets more dubious when our baby monitors get hacked.

All of these connected devices come with their own risks and thanks to OWASP, we have a top 10 most common vulnerability types when it comes to IoT devices. Vulnerability types are exactly what they say they are and should be treated as a category of issues. Each can contain several manifestations of those vulnerability types.

I am going to attempt to bring some clarity to those issues types because I do think OWASP does an amazing job but they have a certain goal in mind and our goals differ. I want you to understand the core concepts of the issue types, even if you might not be fully up to speed with the technical jargon.

It has to be said though that this list stems from 2014 and could use a refresher.
